Our Philosophy
Connect Society's Community Living Support Services (CLSS) is committed to the
belief that all individuals have the right to actively participate in community
life.
Our Goals
To provide a safe, nurturing home to individuals who are unable to live independently.
· To foster the development of optimal independence of the individuals
we serve. · To provide direct support that enables individuals to live
independently and participate fully in society.
Our History
Initially established as a traditional group home serving six individuals in
1980, the program now provides both residential and outreach service to individuals
who are deaf and developmentally delayed and living in the community. The service
provided is based on individual need and can be as intensive as 24-hour support
or a regular weekly home visit.
Our Services
The CLSS program utilizes a counseling approach with its individuals and their
families. Staff possess expertise in the area of deafness and have a professional
background in the rehabilitation field. This blend of experience supports the
holistic approach of this innovative program. The following information describes
our services in more detail.
Fostering Independance
Staff encourage people to strengthen their family connections and to interact
appropriately with their peers. We make it our priority to support individuals
in developing a greater sense of autonomy and independence.
Offering Practical Support
We often provide life skills training in the individual's home. This could include
help with grocery shopping, personal budgeting, social skills training, and advocacy.
It may also mean helping people to access community resources for financial, vocational,
and housing needs and for medical requirements.
Matching Volunteers
We introduce individuals to volunteers who share similar interests. After a
match is made, our goal is to allow their relationship to develop naturally.
As volunteers and clients spend time together, a friendship often develops.
Volunteers are carefully screened and are provided with support as required.
Encouraging Growth
Staff and volunteers provide individuals with opportunities to develop their
language, communication, and social skills by helping them experience life in
their own community. As these skills develop, their self-esteem and self-confidence
grow. They feel less isolated and more a part of their community. In turn, because
of enhanced social and emotional coping skills, they are more likely to be supported
by other community services.
