Our Philosophy

Connect Society’s Deaf Youth Outreach Program (DYOP) is committed to supporting families who face the difficult task of choosing the educational option that best suits their deaf or hard-of-hearing child.

Our History

In 1991, the DYOP was established to provide students from Saskatchewan with a safe and supportive home environment when they came to Edmonton to attend specialized education programs. The program further expanded when Connect Society was asked to provide residential supports for Alberta students as well. Today, DYOP continues to grow and develop as it evolves to meet the needs of the broad range of families we serve.

Our Supports

As deaf or hard-of hearing children near school age, families begin to consider the educational options available to them. For some, that may mean uprooting the entire family to move closer to services or it may mean temporarily entrusting your child’s care to another. We empathize with families facing this difficult decision. Our goal is to provide families with support in making their decisions. FAMILY LINK

Maintaining the link between a child and his or her family is a priority of this service. Students live in a warm, nurturing home environment, specifically chosen to meet their social, emotional, and communication needs. Parents take a lead role in determining the type of home their child will live in and continue to be a part of the decision making process throughout the school year. Students maintain regular contact with their families and, whenever possible, return home for weekends or school holidays.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION

We try to ensure your child’s leads a “full and fulfilling” life by providing social, recreational, and cultural connections that are congruent with your family’s values.

THE SCHOOL CONNECTION

Connect Society staff meet regularly with your child’s principal, teachers, and staff to promote the educational goals chosen by you and your child.

PROFESSIONAL STAFF

Your child will live with Family Support Workers who are carefully screened and trained by Connect..

The Program Manager conducts home visits and provides additional support, guidance, and advocacy for your child.
